Les artistes du spectacle sont, comme les techniciens, des salariés. C’est la raison pour laquelle il existe des minima de rémunération.
Le SMIC (salaire minimum interprofessionnel de croissance) est le minimum légal. Il s’exprime en heure (10.25 € brut depuis le 1er janvier 2019). Il constitue un plancher en deçà duquel on ne peut pas rémunérer un salarié.
Les minima précisés dans les conventions collectives sont les minima conventionnels. Ils sont différents selon les conventions, ils peuvent varier selon les métiers (artistes dramatiques, musiciens, danseurs…), l’objet de la prestation (répétition ou représentation) et selon d’autres critères (taille des salles dans le spectacle vivant par exemple).
